後來為了表示較大的數，羅馬人用符號 c 表示一百。c 是義大利字「cento」的頭乙個字母，cento就是一百的意思（英文「century」就是由此而來）。用符號 m 表示一千。
m 是義大利字「mille」的頭乙個字母，mille 就是一千的意思。取字母 c 的一半，成為符號 l，表示五十。用字母 d 表示五百。
若在數的上面畫一橫線，這個數就擴大一千倍。這樣，羅馬數字就有下面七個基本符號：i（1）、v（5）、x（10）、l（50）、c（100）、d（500）、 m（1000）。
記數的方法：
相同的數字連寫，所表示的數等於這些數字相加得到的數，如 ⅲ=3，英文讀作three。
小的數字在大的數字的右邊，所表示的數等於這些數字相加得到的數，如 ⅷ=8、讀eight，ⅻ=12，讀twelve。
小的數字（ ⅰ、x 和 c）在大的數字的左邊，所表示的數等於大數減小數得到的數，如 ⅳ=4、讀four，ⅸ=9，讀nine。
在乙個數的上面畫一條橫線，表示這個數的一千倍，如v=5000。另外，m也表示橫線的意義，如vm是5000，讀five thousand。
注意，羅馬數字是從1開始的，沒有表示零的數字。羅馬數字與十進位數字的意義不同，與進製無關。
